What’s that Pink Stuff on the Vinyl?

So you’re getting the boat ready for storage, but there’s this pink/orange/purple stain on the vinyl.  What is it?
There’s the ‘traditional’ black stain, which is in-fact mold/mildew.  And then there’s the pink stain.  This is not mold or mildew, but a by-product of a bacterial microorganism.  The by-product is a pink/red dye, which is soluble in upholstery vinyl.  When it comes into contact with vinyl, it causes a pink stain.  Starbrite’s tech folks have provided their best solution, so far.  It’s not perfect, but it gets the job done.  Here’s their Ultimate Mold and Mildew Solution:3 Step Mold & Mildew Elimination
  1.  Starbrite Mildew Stain Remover.  Spray the vinyl thoroughly.  Saturate a rag with the MSR and lay it on the affected surface for 24 hours.  Stain should be gone, if not re-apply.
  2. Starbrite Mold and Mildew Eliminator.  Follow the directions on the package to mix the sachet with water.  Spray (again saturate) the area and leave it on.  For best results, re-apply about every 60 days.  This kills the mold, mildew, etc.  The mix in the spray bottle is only good for 15 days, so don’t be afraid to use it up.
  3. Starbrite Mildew Stain Blocker.  This is a barrier to help prevent mold and mildew growth.  Apply this once you’ve done all the work of cleaning your vinyl.
We stock all 3 steps to clean vinyl.
Also available:  Mildew Odor Control for storage and Mildew Odor Control -fast release (4-6 hours).
